An incredibly pretty town thanks to an active Lions Club and
a community that gets in and does things.
Cowaramup got its name from the cowara parrot, but it is known
as Cowtown by the locals, an acknowledgement of its central place
in the dairy industry.
It is a small town 10km north of Margaret
River on the Bussell Highway. While it is not obvious to the
first time visitor Cowaramup is also the centre of the northern
wine district.
The first vines were planted thirty years ago at Cowaramup at
Vasse Felix in what was to become a viticultural area of world
renown. Much of the vineyard development is west of the town
along Caves Road, but new vineyards are popping up like mushrooms
all around Cowaramup.
Cowaramup is home of a regional wine centre at which many
of the local wines are available. some for tasting. There is
also a stock of rare aged wines.
Margaret River once had a cheese and butter factory that closed
many years ago. Cowaramup took much satisfaction from a new cheese
factory opening on its doorstep about ten years ago. A second
one followed more recently.
The Cowaramup District club, with its smart bowling greens, is
legendary as a waterhole. Equipped with several full-size billiard
tables the club is popular with both locals and tourists.
It has managed to retain its timber-town character and a small
arts community does well from rustic shops in the main street.
