Yallingup
A surfer's paradise

They've been coming to Yallingup for decades.

For 40 years, young surfers have been making their way from Perth to ride the waves at Smith's Beach (below right), just so they can say they surfed at Yallingup.

And it's no different these days; apart from being a little busier.

Unlike the early days, Yallingup now boasts a sprawling beachfront resort, and it's occupied by surfers and families alike, who use Yallingup as a stepping off point to the rest of the Cape.

The town of Yallingup rises up steeply from the coast into what is known as The Hill. It is some of the district's most expensive land and many of Perth's well heeled have lavish holiday homes there.

They cling to The Hill, many built out over steep drops, all seeking to make the most of the amazing coastal views.

The first view of Yallingup is of the long reef break that stretches out from near the main swimming area. It gives a long breaking wave and big board surfers love it, to the extent that it is home to a special Malibu contest every year.

It's great to see some of the old-timers dust off their mals and show how to hang ten just like they did when they were young things.

But like Augusta. and Margaret River, Yallingup isn't just renowned for its surf; although its surf is very good.

Honeymooners have been coming to Yallingup since before even surfers; to stay at the fabulous Caves House, an impressive hotel with fabulous gardens that lead down to the coast.

There is a range of accommodation, from the hotel to units and expensive holiday homes. Tucked under the coastal trees is a cafe and a few other shops opposite a popular caravan park.

Just a few minutes down the road from Dunsborough, Yallingup is also home to two of the finest art galleries on the Cape; Yallingup Galleries, on Caves Road, and Gunyulgup Galleries, a magnificent structure further back on Gunyulgup Drive, surrounded by a beautiful lake.

A little further down Caves Road as you travel south to Margaret River you'll come across the Crayfish Inn, and if you turn right you'll get to Canal Rocks, and the famed Smith's Beach, a beach break that can test the best who try to tame its power.
